Rep & Select Tryouts
2025 Competitive Teams
NEW in 2025: Rep tryouts are open to all players that reside within the YSBA boundaries. Import rules are in effect. Please review the YSBA Rep and Select Policies & Procedures for further information.
After October 31st, before a player participates in a tryout, practice, game, evaluation, or any other baseball activity with an association/team that does not currently hold the player’s playing rights, the player must obtain the appropriate release(s) in accordance with YSBA and OBA policies.
Select teams must have at least 50% of the players on the roster living within the Association's boundaries.
All players must register online before attending a tryout.
The $25.00 tryout fee can be paid online by credit/debit card or by e-transfer to payregistration@barriebaseball.com. Please include your player's name in the message section so payment can easily be applied. One fee covers all tryouts for that player and is due before the first tryout.
All players and parents must agree to all requirements in order to participate (e.g., waiver, declaration, and/or acknowledgement). Full details are available when you register.

Rep team head coaches will be announced by Tuesday September 3, 2024. The tryout periods will begin on Wednesday September 5 (14U to 18U) and Sunday September 8 (8U to 13U).
Many players will be competing in OBA Championships on Labour Day weekend. For proper arm care, athletes need an appropriate period of rest before tryouts; coaches will accommodate this.
The number of teams offered in each division will be based on player registration and abilities, and availability of coaches. Most age groups will field 2 Rep teams with the possibility of a combined-age dedicated Select team. Final decisions on the number of teams offered in each division will be made in September, in consultation with the head coaches.
Classifications are determined by the Barrie Minor Baseball Board of Directors, in consultation with head coaches. Many factors are considered, including a team's classification the previous year, their level of success, roster changes, etc. Preliminary classifications will be available sometime in October, and final classifications are due to YSBA at the end of January.
2025 Tryout Policy:
- 3 Rep tryouts and 1-2 Select tryouts are usually scheduled for each age group. Additional tryouts may be added, if needed to finalize team selection.
- In divisions with 2 Rep teams, the coach of Team 1 will run the first tryout and the coach of Team 2 will run the second tryout. These tryouts will focus on skills evaluations (no scrimmages).
- Players should make every effort to attend all tryouts. If circumstances do not allow for this, please communicate directly with the head coaches.
- Coaches may release players after the 2nd scheduled tryout if they are better suited to a lower-level team. If there are 2 teams, both coaches must agree on which players to release.
- Scrimmages are permitted at the 3rd tryout to assist Rep coaches with final team selection.
- If 3 Rep teams are offered in any division, all coaches will work together to plan and run the tryouts.
- The Team 1 coach will have first choice of available players looking for a spot on a Rep team. Players may request to be removed from consideration from the higher team but must do so via conversation with that team’s coach before tryouts begin. The coach will decide if the exception is granted, which may be appealed to the Rep Committee if necessary.
- Players who try out for a Rep team may not decline a spot on Team 1 or Team 2 in order to play on a lower-level team. If a player who was not granted an exception as described above turns down a spot that is offered or withdraws after accepting, that player will be released to house league.
- Team 1 must have a fully confirmed roster before any spots are offered on Team 2. The same applies if there is a 3rd Rep team. Open communication and cooperation between coaches is expected.
- YSBA has an open release policy from 8U to 18U, so Team 1 may begin to offer spots as early as the first tryout. Out of respect to all players trying out, if your player receives an early offer please remind them not to share that information with anyone until the final team roster is announced. In most cases, committed players should continue to attend Rep tryouts.
- Depending on how many players are trying out in a division, the first 2 tryout sessions may be divided, and tryouts may be shorter in duration than posted. A coach will email registered players 1-2 days before the first tryout to confirm times and communicate any changes. Please ensure contact email addresses are up to date when you register online.
- To assist with player selection, coaches must work with an independent evaluator that does not have a player trying out in that division. In divisions with multiple Rep teams, coaches may share an evaluator, or each coach may have their own.
- A player that is not selected to a Rep team will be eligible to try out for Select, if offered. Head coaches and additional tryout dates for additional teams will be posted when available. In most age groups, all tryouts will be completed before the end of September.
- Players that only wish to play Select are permitted to only attend Select tryouts, but Select teams are not guaranteed at every age group. The schedule for Select tryouts will be posted as soon as it is finalized.
